During my 8th grade year, I was on my schools cheer team where I experienced bullying. These girls said many things including racist, homophobic, and body shaming things towards me. One that hurt was probably that I was ugly. I knew they were just mean girls but it still hurt how I believed everything they said. I never responded back to them because I was too scared but my mom began to notice how cheer wasn’t fun for me anymore. She asked me what was going on and that’s when I told her. She immediately contacted the school and some of the girls got kicked off the team. However, the bullying did not stop and continued. I just decided to finish out my year and then moved schools to lakeside.

  Prompt: Analyze how you’ve adapted to the demands of this course over the past week, and evaluate one strength and one challenge you anticipate as we progress, justifying your insights with personal examples. I have realized while in this course, that there is a lot of writing and going in depth of our cultures. I did not expect to see everyone in class pretty vulnerable with the different questions asked. My strengths are definitely writing, I enjoy it. A weakness would for sure be the time. I take my time with my writing and I feel like most things in this class are rushed. I knwo this because it always happens to me when I have too much work so I just end up getting pretty overwhelmed.   Prompt : Reflect on how your cultural heritage shapes your daily expectations, inspired by "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid. My cultural heritage leads to many expectations, not only from me but of me as well. Many people expect me to be this perfect latina girl. Like I should have all the curves the movie stars do. From my home It is the complete opposite, they expect me to be a Heaven sent daughter. To have the best grades and clean until I can”t anymore. I can relate to “Girl” because there is another person criticizing every move she makes, telling her what she can and cannot be. I too feel that pressure. The advice coming from her mom sounds far too harsh, I understand. My mom talks that way as well, not in a judgeful manner, more so of a helpful one.
