AUG 15TH

Prompt: Analyze how you’ve adapted to the demands of this course over the past week, and evaluate one strength and one challenge you anticipate as we progress, justifying your insights with personal examples. I have realized while in this course, that there is a lot of writing and going in depth of our cultures. I did not expect to see everyone in class pretty vulnerable with the different questions asked. My strengths are definitely writing, I enjoy it. A weakness would for sure be the time. I take my time with my writing and I feel like most things in this class are rushed. I knwo this because it always happens to me when I have too much work so I just end up getting pretty overwhelmed. Summary: In conclusion this course has not been what I expected it to be. It is not a bad thing. I believe it will push me to do better with my time management skills. I hope to only grow in this class. Reflection: Looking back at my old classes I know I could have probably done better if I had ...

Prompt: Describe a meaningful family tradition unique to your culture and explain how it mirrors or contrasts with the cultural identity themes of expectations and roles in "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid. A meaningful family tradition in my culture would be a quinceanera. This is a huge 15th birthday celebration usually held for the girls. This signifies girls going into womanhood and becoming more responsible, like in the story “Girl”. The girl in these quinces usually has a “last dance” with her father. In my family, every girl has had a quinceanera. These are examples of what the tradition of quinceaneras means to my culture. Summary: Today in class we discussed how in every culture, there are different traditions and norms. Reflection: This activity made me realize how every culture is unique and just as important as the other, no matter the differences we all have our traditions and beliefs.

Prompt : Reflect on how your cultural heritage shapes your daily expectations, inspired by "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid. My cultural heritage leads to many expectations, not only from me but of me as well. Many people expect me to be this perfect latina girl. Like I should have all the curves the movie stars do. From my home It is the complete opposite, they expect me to be a Heaven sent daughter. To have the best grades and clean until I can”t anymore. I can relate to “Girl” because there is another person criticizing every move she makes, telling her what she can and cannot be. I too feel that pressure. The advice coming from her mom sounds far too harsh, I understand. My mom talks that way as well, not in a judgeful manner, more so of a helpful one. Coming from a hispanic catholic household, both of my parents were raised religious and this shapes their ideas to what a young lady should act and look like. Summary: Today in class we read and discussed the short story “Girl” ...
