Dec 17th (Final Post)

 Reflect on the first semester. 


My first semester this year has definitely been rough. I had a bad start because of some bad influences around me which led to being extremely behind on my school. I should’ve caught up and been on track but I found it hard to, it was pretty frustrating that I couldn’t show my full potential and gave a bad first impression on my teachers. But given the fact that it was so bad, it pushes me to try my best in the second semester and show everyone what I’m truly made of. In this class, I truly loved reading The Color Purple. It was so amazing and eye opening I’ve never read anything like it. My favorite project was definitely the final project because I found myself connecting to the characters even more. It was also nice to see how my peers saw the characters themselves because we all perceive things differently. My least favorite part was being behind and I know it was solely on me. I strive to do better and I know I can. So I make a vow of keeping up.

  Prompt: Analyze how you’ve adapted to the demands of this course over the past week, and evaluate one strength and one challenge you anticipate as we progress, justifying your insights with personal examples. I have realized while in this course, that there is a lot of writing and going in depth of our cultures. I did not expect to see everyone in class pretty vulnerable with the different questions asked. My strengths are definitely writing, I enjoy it. A weakness would for sure be the time. I take my time with my writing and I feel like most things in this class are rushed. I knwo this because it always happens to me when I have too much work so I just end up getting pretty overwhelmed.   Prompt : Reflect on how your cultural heritage shapes your daily expectations, inspired by "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid. My cultural heritage leads to many expectations, not only from me but of me as well. Many people expect me to be this perfect latina girl. Like I should have all the curves the movie stars do. From my home It is the complete opposite, they expect me to be a Heaven sent daughter. To have the best grades and clean until I can”t anymore. I can relate to “Girl” because there is another person criticizing every move she makes, telling her what she can and cannot be. I too feel that pressure. The advice coming from her mom sounds far too harsh, I understand. My mom talks that way as well, not in a judgeful manner, more so of a helpful one. Coming from a hispanic catholic household, both of my parents were raised religious and this shapes their ideas to what a young lady should act and look like.
