Prompt: Describe a meaningful family tradition unique to your culture and explain how it mirrors or contrasts with the cultural identity themes of expectations and roles in "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid.

A meaningful family tradition in my culture would be a quinceanera. This is a huge 15th birthday celebration usually held for the girls. This signifies girls going into womanhood and becoming more responsible, like in the story “Girl”. The girl in these quinces usually has a “last dance” with her father. In my family, every girl has had a quinceanera. These are examples of what the tradition of quinceaneras means to my culture.

Summary: Today in class we discussed how in every culture, there are different traditions and norms.

Reflection: This activity made me realize how every culture is unique and just as important as the other, no matter the differences we all have our traditions and beliefs.
