Prompt: Reflect on how your cultural heritage shapes your daily expectations, inspired by "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid.

My cultural heritage leads to many expectations, not only from me but of me as well. Many people expect me to be this perfect latina girl. Like I should have all the curves the movie stars do. From my home It is the complete opposite, they expect me to be a Heaven sent daughter. To have the best grades and clean until I can”t anymore. I can relate to “Girl” because there is another person criticizing every move she makes, telling her what she can and cannot be. I too feel that pressure. The advice coming from her mom sounds far too harsh, I understand. My mom talks that way as well, not in a judgeful manner, more so of a helpful one. Coming from a hispanic catholic household, both of my parents were raised religious and this shapes their ideas to what a young lady should act and look like.

Summary: Today in class we read and discussed the short story “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid.

Reflection: “Girl” made me compare the standards and expectations for young ladies such as myself, and others around me based on our different backgrounds.
